Maine farmer says farmers and consumers would both benefit from better access to SNAP benefits

Nice write up by Wholesome Wave of Maine farmer Sarah Smith, who helped kick off the introduction of HR 1414: Local Farms, Food and Jobs Act last month

Smith highlighted the impact the bill would make on improving the incomes of small and mid-size farmers and low-income consumers in her region of Maine. “Millions of dollars are coming into Maine through SNAP every month and if farmers could capture just a small percentage of those dollars, it would (have) a huge amount of impact,” Smith told reporters.

Consumer Reports releases disturbing study on bacteria in ground turkey meat

A Consumer Reports study released today found that most of the 257 turkey samples it tested were positive for harmful strains of bacteria.  This is yet another sign that the industrial agriculture practice of frequently feeding animals antibiotics is making germs more resistant to them. And, as we eat meat with those traces of antibiotics, we also become more susceptible.
